Hi Elaine,
We hear this a lot :) In fact if you save your form template as a "pdf" rather than an "xdp" then you do not need a custom render service. We did however place a render service for XDP available in Workbench I think under Samples - Forms.

Check out Seth Reilly's blog on this subject at http://livecycleapps.wordpress.com/
Our docs also give it a mention at: http://livedocs.adobe.com/livecycle/8.2/wb_help/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=Workbench_ES&file=000989.html

I'll also drop you an email and maybe we can look at your app over a Connect.
Cheers

Hi Gary, I thought I would post my question here as I did not really have a good place on your site to post it to.

I've been searching the net to try to understand the "overriding the render service" ability, and although I have found many examples, I'm still confused by the urlSpec, targetURL, workspace-enable service, etc.

What I am finding lacking is that although there are examples that I can steal, I really want a step-by-step explanation of each service and the input/output variables and what everything means. Do you know if there's something available for that? Even workbench seems to be confusing.

I suffer from "can't-sleep-if-I-don't-know-it-completely" ;-)

Thanks in advance,
Elaine

Thanks Gary. The problem turned out to be that my process used an xdp file and I had to override the default render service (now, that was an effort in itself!).

Hi, Elaine,

As with any form/pdf used to start a process in workspace you need to define a "form variable" in a long lived process, point the form variable to your form stored in the LC repository and set it as in input variable. We put together a little guide here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fhelp.adobe.com%2Fen_US%2Flivecycle%2Fes%2Fcreatefirstapp.pdf&ei=CXyKSbSjB4TcNPiUiNsP&usg=AFQjCNHKbKqw2F6RjWNygVubKMdNLJJTMw&sig2=ukhxPYfdD-XhrRAY9Op_lA

Also if that does not help, send me your process (export it by right clicking the process in the process tree in workbench) then I can loot at it and send it back.

Gary, thanks for this, this was a great tutorial. How do I call the process from workspace? I have the form set up, and tried to create a dummy main process that really did nothing, but I'm getting an ALC-WKS-007-040) Error ocurred creating the form.

the log files says: "malformed pdf or data".

I created LDAP process GetLDAPUser, then I created a form just like the one you have in the demo. Then I created a process that would take this form as input and really do nothing with it, but I did that so I could create an endpoint for that process so I could use it in workspace.

Please advise, thanks very much!

Looks like the upcoming LiveCycle ES 2.0 will support MTOM. However, LC ES 2.0 will be coming late 2009.

> LiveCycle does not yet support MTOM.

Technically, LiveCycle doesn't support DIME either, right? Technically, it's the Apache proxy code that supports DIME and then it calls LiveCycle using Java interface methods, or am I missing something?

Couldn't one use MTOM instead of DIME by using similar proxy code?

HI

Thanks for the comments. As of LiveCycle ES 8.2 - LiveCycle does not yet support MTOM. I think this is stated on the first page :)

If you do not want to use DIME or base64 - you can use BLOB data over HTTP.

This is a great guide. Many thanks for posting this. There are a couple of things I'd like to see added:

- As I understand it, DIME is on its way out and is being replaced by MTOM. It would be nice to see an MTOM approach added to the document.

- Invoking LiveCycle from .NET is only half the story. Illustrating how to invoke a .NET web service from within a LiveCycle orchestration would also be helpful. The current LiveCycle ES SOAP component only supports SwA which .NET doesn't directly support.

We've encountered both the need to pass a PDF via a web service call from .NET to LiveCycle and vice-versa. This paper will help us improve the way we do the former. We're in the process of implementing an MTOM based solution for the latter.
